2012 Audio Book Challenge

2012 Audio Book Challenge Hosted by Teresa’s Reading Corner

Hosted by Teresa’s Reading Corner.

Information copied from the hosts blog…..

Welcome to the Orignial Audio Book Challenge formerly hosted by Alaine at Queen of Happy Endings. This challenge is for Audio Book lovers as well as those who are brand new to them.

I’ve been listening to your feedback and I’m convinced that the 2012 challenge is going to be better than ever. There will still be targets for achievement, but I’m raising them a bit since many of our participants are avid audio book listeners.

Once again, there are four levels to the challenge

  • Flirting-Listen to 6 Audio Books
  • Going Steady- Listen to 12 Audio Books
  • Lover- Listen to 25 Audio Books
  • Married-Listen to +++  Audio Books
*A big Thank You to fellow blogger and twitter buddy @dogearedcopy for her suggestions on the level names.

There will be a monthly link up so that we can share what we’ve listened to and make suggestions to each other. Along with that monthly link up there will be a special monthly challenge so make sure you stop by each month!

Inspired by Beth Fish Reads and There’s A Book I’m going to be adding a feature (still unnamed) in which we get to know Audio Book Publishers. I’ll be asking them about what they’ve got coming up as well as about their back list titles and of course, the chance to win an Audio Book or two!

I’ll also be adding a feature in which we can get to know our fellow participants. If you are interested in appearing in this feature, please fill out the attached google form.

I hope I’ve enticed you to join in the 2012 Audio Book Challenge. I’m really looking forward to reading your reviews and experiences over the next year.

Official Challenge dates: 1/1/2012-12/31/2012

I’m going to start with the Flirting level since I’m brand spanking new to audio books and see where that takes me.

Passionate Heat

“As a fan of gorgeous firefighters, I’m thrilled with Rachel Kenley’s smokin’ hot hero, Miles Anderson. Passionate Heat is a hot and sensual read, well paced and with characters you’ll grow to love. I’ll be the first in line to buy the next book in this series!” Elle Amery A troubled past. When Miles Anderson left Glenway, he never wanted to see the small town again. Labeled a troublemaker and a no-account because of his parents, he was ready to move on with his life. But he didn’t think his decision would mean he’d never see Jillian Wagner again either. After Miles was gone, Jillian turned to the wrong people for support and lost her dreams in the process. An unexpected return. Now an arson and explosion expert, Miles is asked by an old friend and father figure to come home and help put an end to a suspicious string of fires. He agrees, only to discover more than burned out buildings. Jillian is still there, no longer the dancer she once dreamed of becoming, and newly divorced. As buildings in Glenway continue to burn, Miles cannot help but think Jillian is a target. A fight for the future. Jillian never expected to see Miles again. She had made peace with her past – mistakes and all – and was ready to move on. With his return, however, comes an abundance of old feelings, starting with anger and swiftly moving to desire and love. Miles never thought he could have a home, but with Jillian in his life again, everything is different. Because nothing burns hotter than a rekindled love.

2012 Why Buy the Cow (Free E-Book) Reading Challenge

Welcome to the Why Buy the Cow? Reading Challenge 2012! This reading challenge was previously called the Show Me the FREE RC, but this year, I have a co-host, Kelly from Reading the Paranormal, and we decided to shake things up a bit.

Quick FYI: This is not a library books, books you’ve won, or ARCs reading challenge. There are already plenty reading challenges for those specific type of books. You can find them here: A Novel Challenge.

This reading challenge has been developed specifically for FREE and LEGAL downloaded books. As many of you with e-readers know, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and a few other site periodically offer FREE books for your e-reading devices.

The aim of this challenge is to grab and read those FREE and LEGAL downloads!

Since getting my Kindle, I’ve downloaded 300 Free books from Amazon, but sadly, I’ve only read a handful. Kelly, my new sidekick, has read over 100 Free books! Even though I failed my own RC miserably, Kelly has inspired me to renew my determination to get those FREE books off my TBR, and we want you to join us!

Here is how it works:

  • Should you choose to participate in this challenge, your goal is to read at least twelve (12) legally obtained FREE e-books. While twelve is the minimum there is no maximum limit.
  • Anyone can join. You don’t have to be a blogger, and you don’t have to live in the United States.
  • Any E-Reader will work for this challenge, including: iPad, Kindle, Nook, Kobo, Sony Reader, enTourage.
  • Please Note: If you don’t have an e-reading device, you can still join in with Amazon’s Free Kindle Reading Appswhich you can download for your iPhone, iPad, Mac, PC, Blackberry and more.
  • The challenge runs from January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2012. You can join at anytime.
  • e-books in ANY genre count for this challenge as long as it was FREE at the time that you downloaded it.
  • Every month in 2012, I will make a post for the Why Buy the Cow? Reading Challenge 2012 so you can link your reviews.  Based on participation, monthly link ups may be combined.
  • Those that link their reviews will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win a different prize each month, such as an Amazon or Barnes & Noble Gift Card, a bookmark, or a GelaSkins for your e-Reader.

Challenge Guidelines:

  • If you have a blog, create a post announcing your participation in the challenge. Please include a link back to this post.
  • Non blogger must publish reviews on some type of public domain such as Goodreads, Shelfari, LibraryThing, Amazon, or Barnes & Noble to enter the monthly giveaway.
  • When you post your book review, you MUSTreveal how you obtained the free & legal download. Please make your source clear.
  • You can list your books in advance or list them as you read them.
  • Crossovers to other reading challenges is acceptable, but ARCs/galley e-books DO NOT count. Again, this is a Reading Challenge to read as many of the FREE e-books legally offered for your e-reader. Book Review ~ The Shadow Rider’s by Louis L’Amour

The Shadow Riders
Louis L’Amour
224 pages

5/5

Synopsis: Dal and Mac Traven left Texas young and idealistic. They came back from opposite sides of a living hell, a war that had torn the nation in two. They wanted only to reclaim their old lives…but one man held their future hostage.

Colonel Henry T. Ashford had gathered an army of criminals and renegade soldiers, leading them on a path of destruction and kidnapping through Texas to the Gulf. Among Ashford’s captives were the Travens’ sister and Dal’s tough-minded fiancée, Kate.

Now Mac and Dal must take up arms once again and ride together against Ashford’s army—ready to fight another war, if that’s what it takes to win the freedom of the women they love.

Review:

I am a big fan of Louis L’Amour. He writes a story that when you start it you feel like you’re actually there while it’s taking place. Like a couple of his other novel’s this particular book was made into a movie…Which I too enjoy. Naturally, I saw the movie before I read the book but I was equally happy with both.

The Traven brothers – Mac, Dal and younger brother Jesse – all head off to the war between the states. When the war is over they head for home only to find that a whole ‘nother “war” has taken place before they even get home. A tough confederate Colonel who refuses to let the war end has taken to assembling an “army” of rouge soldiers and outlaws and proceeds to lead them on a path of death, destruction and kidnapping across Texas all the way to the Gulf of Mexico.

Now what this Colonel doesn’t know is that he has taken the Traven’s sister and Dal’s tough-as-nails girl, Kate, hostage. The Traven’s don’t take to kindly to that thought and take up arms to get back their family as well as the other’s who have been kidnapped. What happens next is a pretty AWESOME story of determination, love and some “ha, ha sucks to be you.”

Book Review ~ Hondo by Louis L’Amour

 Hondo
Louis L’Amour

4/5

Synopsis:

He was etched by the desert’s howling winds, a big, broad-shouldered man who knew the ways of the Apache and the ways of staying alive. She was a woman alone raising a young son on a remote Arizona ranch. And between Hondo Lane and Angie Lowe was the warrior Vittoro, whose people were preparing to rise against the white men. Now the pioneer woman, the gunman, and the Apache warrior are caught in a drama of love, war, and honor.

Review:

Louie does it again in my opinion! This is another one of his novels that was turned into a movie featuring my favorite actor of ALL TIME John Wayne. There really is a lot going on in this book…The Apaches are uprising….Angie Lowe and her little boy have been left to fend for themselves on their ranch (which is on a watering hole that the Apaches frequent), the army is trying to get the Apache situation under control while trying to save the lives of the families around the fort and Hondo Lane is in the middle running dispatch for the army while trying to keep not only himself alive but also Angie and her little boy.

Lots of drama….Lots of gun play….Lots of all the things that make a Louis L’Amour western a Louis L’Amour novel.

Book Review ~ Fool by Christopher Moore

Fool is a Christopher Moore’s own “wicked” poke at William Shakespeare’s King Lear. Now this book is NOT for the faint of heart. There is even a warning at the front of the book that reads: “This is a bawdy tale. Herein you will find gratuitous shagging, murder, spanking, maiming, treason, and heretofore unexplored heights of vulgarity and profanity, as well as non-traditional grammar, split infinitives, and the odd wank. If that sort of thing bothers you then gentle reader pass by, for we endeavor only to entertain, not to offend. That said, if that’s the sort of thing you think you might enjoy, then you happened upon the perfect story!” In the beginning the language was a little bit hard to interpret but as the story went along it was easier to the language became much easier to follow. This story was VERY engaging…At least for me it was. I hope that you check this book out!

The main character is Pocket, who has been Lear’s much cherished fool for many years. Being so trusted Pocket is at his master’s side when Lear demands that his three daughters swear to him their undying love and absolute devotion. Naturally, the snakes, Goneril and Regan are only too happy to tell daddy exactly what he wants to hear. But Lear’s third daughter Cordelia believes that her father’s request is to be blunt…kind of stupid and her blunt honesty gets banished and she also forfits her share of Lear’s kingdom as well.

Now the shit has really hit the fan. And the only person who can make it right? Pocket. Now he’s going to have to use some pretty fancy “foot work” (casting a few spells, start a war or two…the usual basic stuff) to get Cordelia back into Lear’s good graces, derail the evil power plays of Cordelia’s evil sisters and shag every single shaggable woman who’s agreeable along the way.

Now Pocket may be a fool . . . but he’s definitely not an idiot. Especially when you come to the end and learn a little bit more about our dear friend Pocket.
